The Lana, Dorchester Collection: A Quiet Triumph

Dorchester Collection’s first foray into the Middle East, opened its doors in February 2024, bringing with it the kind of effortless elegance the brand is known for. Sitting beside the Marasi Bay Marina, this 30-storey landmark blends into the city with ease – eye-catching.

The arrival was significant. Dorchester Collection represents one of the most respected names in luxury hospitality, with a portfolio of just ten properties worldwide, including such heavyweights as The Dorchester in London and Le Meurice in Paris. Each hotel is a one-off, shaped by its location but united by an emphasis on heritage, craft, and highly personalised service. In bringing this approach to Dubai, The Lana joins a select circle.

The building leans into its waterfront setting with soft, sculptural lines that echo the curves of the marina below, reflecting the sleek design of Foster + Partners. Inside, Parisian design duo Gilles & Boissier have taken a similarly restrained approach, crafting spaces that breathe. Think of warm desert tones, natural textures, and floor-to-ceiling windows that invite the outside in. The Lana’s 225 rooms and suites are generous in both space and light, even entry-level rooms begin at nearly 60 square meters, while the Royal Suite unfolds across 355 square meters of understated glamour.

The scale is notable, though it’s the use of space and restraint in design that stand out. Lana’s appeal lies in its finesse: The kind of detail that reveals itself slowly. A corner of the room lit just right. A linen so finely pressed it barely whispers. A corridor that carries silence, not echoes. It’s a place that feels considered, curated, and decidedly calm, a contrast to the sensory rush found elsewhere in the city.

Across its eight restaurants, the emphasis remains on well-executed menus and thoughtful settings rather than overt spectacle. The Lana brings together some of the most respected names in gastronomy. Martín Berasategui’s Basque restaurant, Jara, claims the 18th floor with rich, earthy flavours and a view to match. Jean Imbert lends his distinctive touch to Riviera, a Mediterranean dining experience that plays host to long lunches and golden-hour dinners with the Burj Khalifa in sight. For a more elevated escape, the rooftop High Society bar pairs cocktails with city views from an infinity-edge pool.

Then there’s the Dior Spa, the maison’s first in the UAE, located on the 29th floor. Wrapped in glass and flooded with light, it offers a selection of treatments designed to rejuvenate without overstatement. Here too, there’s a certain quietude. Its impact isn’t immediate, but steady, as it is a space that holds rather than commands.

There’s no single feature that defines The Lana. Its strength lies in the cumulative effect, everything works quietly together: the hush of the corridor, the weight of the door, the morning light across a stone floor. As quietness fills the place within easy reach of Downtown Dubai, it offers a composed vantage point from which to observe the city, or to step back from it entirely.
