Abu Dhabi Unveils Plans for Region’s Largest Artificial Coral Reef

Abu Dhabi is set to become home to the largest artificial coral reef project in the Middle East, as part of a major marine biodiversity initiative led by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD). Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the project will roll out 40,000 artificial reef modules across 1,200 square kilometres of the emirate’s coastal and offshore waters by 2030.

The reef structures will be made from sustainable, long-lasting materials and designed in various shapes to provide shelter and breeding grounds for marine life. Many of the modules will be seeded with live coral fragments cultivated in Abu Dhabi’s coral nurseries, using species known for their resilience in warmer waters.

The aim is to restore marine ecosystems, enhance biodiversity and replenish fish stocks in areas that have suffered ecological decline. The EAD estimates that the artificial reefs could generate over five million kilograms of fish each year, while also strengthening the UAE’s coastal defences against climate-related impacts.

Beyond ecological restoration, the Coral Garden project is expected to open new opportunities for diving, eco-tourism, and recreational fishing, contributing to Abu Dhabi’s environmental and economic sustainability goals.
