Dubai Expands Smart Pedestrian Signal Project Across 10 New Locations

Crossing the street just got smarter, and safer, in Dubai. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed the second phase of its Smart Pedestrian Signal Project, rolling out advanced crossing systems at 10 new locations across the city.

This forward-thinking initiative integrates artificial intelligence and thermal detection technology to monitor pedestrian movement in real time, ensuring that signals adapt automatically to foot traffic. The result? A smoother, safer crossing experience, even during low-light hours or late at night.

Unlike traditional systems, these smart signals respond dynamically to real-world movement, detecting when people are waiting or still crossing, and adjusting signal durations accordingly. The goal is to minimize wait times, reduce jaywalking, and improve the flow of both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

The RTA’s expanded rollout signals another leap toward Dubai’s vision of becoming a global smart city, where innovation serves daily life. With pedestrian safety and traffic efficiency both top priorities, the streets of Dubai are set to feel more intuitive than ever.
