Dubai’s future transport plans look like something from a sci-fi film

Dubai is set to roll out a new wave of transport initiatives designed to ease traffic and improve connectivity across the city. The plans cover a range of technologies, from underground tunnels to airborne vehicles, each offering a distinct approach to urban mobility challenges. These developments are part of broader efforts to accommodate the city’s growing population and evolving transport needs.

One of the headline projects is the Dubai Loop, a tunnel-based transit system proposed by Elon Musk’s Boring Company. The initial phase includes 11 stations along a 17km route, with ambitions to eventually transport up to 100,000 passengers per hour. Meanwhile, a network of flying taxis is being developed, with plans to connect areas such as Downtown Dubai and Palm Jumeirah via short flights at high speeds. Each taxi is expected to carry four passengers and a pilot.

Other innovations include the Floc Duo Rail – a pod-based rail system featuring lightweight, self-driving electric vehicles. The modular design allows for flexible scaling and requires minimal infrastructure. Also in development is the Rail Bus, a solar-powered vehicle designed for short-distance commutes. With a capacity of 40 passengers, it is intended to support connections between neighbourhoods and major transport routes.

In addition to land and air-based systems, a seaglider is being considered for fast, electric-powered travel between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, potentially cutting the journey to 30 minutes. Lastly, a trackless tram system has been proposed, offering a cost-efficient, rail-free solution for urban commuting. These initiatives signal a shift towards more sustainable and diverse transport options in the city.
