Al Karama to Become Car-Free Zone as Part of Dubai’s Super Block Initiative

Dubai is moving steadily towards a more sustainable and pedestrian-friendly future with the rollout of its Super Block initiative. Al Karama, one of the city’s most historic and densely populated neighbourhoods, is set to become a car-free zone – a significant shift in urban planning. Known for its vibrant mix of shops, restaurants, and residential blocks, the area is often choked with traffic – something this initiative aims to change.

Launched by Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Super Block project is a key component of the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033 and the broader 2040 Urban Master Plan. It will transform residential zones by reducing car dependency, boosting walkability, and increasing green spaces. Alongside Al Karama, Al Fahidi, Abu Hail, and the Al Quoz Creative Zone will undergo similar changes – turning into spaces designed for pedestrians and cyclists.

Beyond traffic reduction, the city is also investing in greener, healthier environments. A 6,500-kilometre pedestrian network is in development, and 300,000 trees were planted in 2025 as part of a citywide landscaping effort. These projects align with Dubai’s push for cleaner air, more outdoor living, and better community health.

This is just one element of a wider transformation. Initiatives like Therme Dubai – a wellness resort set to feature the world’s largest indoor botanical garden – signal a future where sustainability and well-being are central to city life. The Super Block programme marks the beginning of a longer journey to reshape how people move, live, and interact across Dubai.
