AI-Powered Water Jets and a Luminous Sphere Set to Transform Al Maryah Island Waterfront

Al Maryah Island is undergoing a remarkable transformation, as Mubadala unveils plans for a new waterfront destination in the heart of Abu Dhabi. Central to the redevelopment is a 30-metre-tall luminous sphere, sheathed in flowing water and positioned within the bay. Surrounding it will be more than 1,000 AI-powered water jets, soaring up to 75 metres in synchronised sequences choreographed to music composed by Ramin Djawadi, known for his work on Game of Thrones and Batman Begins.

The feature is designed by WET, the creative studio behind some of the world’s most recognisable water displays. Alongside this centrepiece, the project will introduce a seafront boardwalk with direct access to the water’s edge, shaded outdoor cooling systems, and new dining and leisure zones. Public spaces designed for year-round events and cultural gatherings will also form part of the new waterfront, enhancing the area’s appeal for both residents and international visitors.

Dr Bakheet Al Katheeri, CEO of UAE Investments at Mubadala, described the redevelopment as an opportunity to elevate quality of life and reinforce Al Maryah Island’s reputation as a lifestyle and tourism hub. The aim is to create an integrated public realm that blends iconic design with everyday utility.

While no official completion date has been announced, the waterfront project forms part of Mubadala’s wider vision to support Abu Dhabi’s sustainable, globally competitive urban development strategy. Once complete, the site is expected to become a key attraction along the capital’s evolving coastline.
