Dubai Prepares for a Future Without Cash

First announced in October 2024, the Dubai Cashless Strategy aims for 90 percent of all government and private sector payments to be made without cash by the end of 2026. That shift is expected to contribute more than Dhs8 billion to the economy each year.

The move doesn’t mean money disappears altogether – you’ll still pay, but increasingly through banking apps, cards, and contactless options. New technologies such as AI-driven tools and advanced digital payment solutions are also being prioritised to expand the ways people can pay.

Dubai Finance is driving the campaign forward with awareness programmes, agreements with government departments, and partnerships with fintech leaders. Earlier this year, workshops led by DIFC and Dubai Finance began helping businesses adapt, while collaborations with firms like Network International are working on seamless, innovative payment solutions for the public.

The strategy also highlights integration: from secure transactions at GDRFA to retail adoption across malls, souqs, and beyond. The goal is for every store in the city to accept digital payments, so residents and visitors alike can go fully cashless in their daily lives.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, confirmed the ambition to rank Dubai among the top five cashless cities worldwide. For shoppers, tourists, and businesses, it marks a future of speed, convenience and fewer coins rattling in your pocket.
