Emirates to Prohibit Power Bank Use Onboard from October

Starting 1 October 2025, Emirates passengers will notice a change in what they can do with their personal gadgets in the air. The airline is introducing a ban on using power banks during flights, a move it says is designed to enhance safety after a detailed review of industry-wide incidents involving lithium batteries.

Travellers will still be allowed to bring one power bank in their hand luggage, but only if it meets specific requirements. The device must have a capacity of under 100 Watt Hours, with the rating clearly displayed, and must be stored either in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat in front. Stowing it in overhead bins, placing it in checked luggage, or using it to charge devices mid-flight will no longer be permitted. Charging the power bank itself via the aircraft’s power supply is also off-limits.

Emirates says the decision follows a noticeable rise in power bank usage in recent years, which has coincided with a growing number of lithium battery-related incidents across the aviation sector. By tightening its policy, the airline aims to take a proactive role in reducing potential hazards before they occur.

The new rules build on existing safety measures, such as the longstanding ban on carrying power banks in checked baggage. Passengers planning to travel from October onwards are encouraged to review their devices ahead of time to ensure compliance, helping to avoid delays at security checks or boarding.

With the changes just weeks away, Emirates’ updated guidelines serve as a reminder of how even small personal items can carry big safety considerations at 40,000 feet.
