The airline said the move follows a detailed safety review after a global increase in incidents linked to lithium batteries. Power banks, which rely on lithium-ion and lithium-polymer cells, can overheat or catch fire if damaged or overcharged. Emirates’ new rule aims to minimise that risk while ensuring cabin crew can respond quickly in the unlikely event of a malfunction.
Under the guidelines, power banks cannot be placed in overhead bins or checked baggage. They also cannot be used to charge personal devices during flights, nor recharged using the aircraft’s power supply. Labels showing capacity ratings must be clearly visible.
Passengers will still be able to use in-seat charging points available across Emirates aircraft. The airline, however, advises travellers to board with fully charged devices, especially for long-haul routes.
