UAE Warns Against Misuse of AI-generated Images

The UAE Media Council has issued a strong reminder to the public about the risks of misusing artificial intelligence for image creation. Announced on Thursday September 25, the new directive makes clear that generating or sharing AI images that feature national symbols or public figures without official permission is prohibited.

Authorities stressed that AI tools must not be used to spread false information, attack social values, or defame others. Any violation of these rules is classified as a media offence and comes under the Media Violations Regulation, which imposes both fines and administrative penalties.

The warning applies not just to media companies, but to everyday social media users and content creators. The council urged everyone to follow approved standards and ensure ethical use of digital technologies.

Fines vary depending on the severity of the breach. They range from Dhs10,000 for circulating rumours or forged documents to as high as Dhs1 million for offences such as insulting Islamic beliefs. Other penalties cover actions like disrespecting state institutions, publishing harmful content, or undermining national unity.

Earlier this year, the UAE Media Council also partnered with Presight, a data company, to introduce AI systems that monitor and verify media outputs across books, films, artworks and other content – part of its ongoing drive to safeguard the information space.
